An African Dream supports several projects in the Kasese district in Western Uganda.
The education of orphans is a key part of the vision of An African Dream, as being orphaned (which may mean the loss of one or both parents) significantly disadvantages children.
Education provides them with a good grounding in English and other key subjects. It also gives them stability and confidence.
An African Dream supports orphans through St Mark’s Primary School was set up in 2007 and currently has around 400 pupils, aged between 4-16, of which 1/3 are orphans. Through sponsorship AAD provides education, two meals a day, a uniform and a pair of shoes for each orphan. It also ensures staff are paid and facilities are developed.
AAD supports over 200 widows across 73 churches in the region. Their vision is for the widows to know that they are loved and cared about, as widows are generally looked down upon in the community so they most certainly feel vulnerable.
As well as providing spiritual encouragement, AAD has successfully funded a project to supply pigs for widows which is now self-sustaining. The pig breeding enables widows to provide for their families and with the proceeds many of them have bought essential items such as soap, cooking oil, mattresses, blankets and corrugated iron roof sheets, in addition to providing school fees and digging latrines. AAD is now working with the community to seek further opportunities for providing sustainable income projects.
Producing a calendar was one way that An African Dream raised money and awareness in the UK.
